Wine party and dinner on "The Hill"

Family FolliesWine party and dinner on "The Hill"
June 2006

A few members of the family have procured numerous bottles of handcrafted wine from a prodigious vintner, Uncle Rich. Spanning the next few months, it is related many times that there should be a wine tasting party, but it never transpires. Eventually, the fruits of another visit to the Uncle in Southern Illinois mean yet a few more bottles of vino. How was the other wine we are asked? We sheepishly admit that no vintages have been cracked. Eventually, after many months of no wine party, something is finally scheduled for a warm (make that hot) day in June.

Pesto Recipe

Family FolliesThis recipe Pesto recipe is very close to what Wendy and I do. We can not be too sure, we wing-it mostly. The food processor and basil will dictate how much olive oil is needed. With too little, the food processor will have trouble working the mixuture. Watch the garlic, better to err on less than having too much and overpowering the basil.

recover public cred in NIS+

  View Printable Version
Solaris Stuffadmins attempted to update system's root password and private keys, not the public keys for the system. The public key was updated on the NIS+ master with the "nisclient -co" command. Once the public key is updated on the NIS+ master, encrypted communication immediately fails between the replicas and all the clients. Communication works fine from the replicas to the clients. Our solution was to get all the replicas and clients to realize the public key change, which was re-NIS-ing all the servers. That is a boat load of work. There may be another option, use/review at your own risk,

T-Ball Assistant Coaching

  View Printable Version
Family FolliesI have volunteered to be assistant coach for T-Ball this season, with St. Ambrose for pre-k and K kids. It can be difficult, they are so young, most all of them can not reliably throw or catch a ball. Both I an the coach are new to this, been looking for resources and talking to other coaches, here are some things our team and other with younger players could use to teach basics and good habits.
Since I have one son in each of these grades, it seemed a good idea to be out there helping.

funny getent results

  View Printable Version
DNS StuffThe dns round robin alias appears broken with use of getent on Solaris 2.6 and 8.

Getent is an OS tool, DNS has no control on how it formats or returns data.

Summary, if the server you run getent on is in the same network as one of the query results, it order results by that network first. It appears it will NEVER round robin with this command. DNS can not override this.

This will affect batch or load balancing.

Family FolliesThe Gregory leg yarn continues. He is just now getting over knee cap pain, as John III kicked him there about 10 days ago. This is not even the worst of it, before he was kicked in the knee, by occasionally fitful John, he had this hip problem.

DS 5.2 group search filter option, not documented?

  View Printable Version
LDAP blogThere is an undocumented parameter to tune for the specific
ways DS52 works w/group-type searches. Your dse.ldif may have
already the "nsslapd-search-tune: 1" setting.
This parameter can not be updated with the GUI, must stop the service, update dse.ldif, restart.

This parameter is used because group queries do not scale well.

Leg Update

  View Printable Version
Family FolliesBeen quite a while since the spica cast came off. It was December 17th when it was cut off. So close to Christmas, Grandma Baur supplied a Santa hat for the Orthopedic Dr. Just before the cast was to be cut off, we found out who would be taking the cast off, took him aside and asked if he would wear the Santa cap and pretend to be Santa's helper. He had no problem doing just that, and played it up very well.
